A striking series of paintings inspired by the Tay estuary and other Scottish landscapes are being exhibited at the Tower Foyer Gallery, University of Dundee until the end of December. ‘Time/Tide – Moments from Places’ features recent work by artist Robert McGilvray, who is well-known as a painter and for his various public art projects.

He explained, “The paintings are largely concerned with an imaginary diary of many years’ close contact with the skies and waters of the Tay Estuary, absorbing its ever changing light, colour and climatic conditions.

“They reflect journeys of memory and responses to a sense of place. More recently, I have also begun to explore memories of the west coast of Scotland and the Islands, acknowledging the dramatic difference in mood between the two areas.”

Robert McGilvray will be retiring from his role as lecturer in Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in December, having taught there since 1977 and studied there 1970-75. He helped to found the Dundee Group (Artists) Ltd and Forebank Studios in the 1970s (the predecessor of today’s WASPS studios), co-ordinated the ground-breaking Blackness and Dundee public art programmes in the 1980s and 90s, and co-founded the Seagate Gallery, the forerunner to DCA, in 1986.

The Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS) is working together with the Making the Most Of Masters (MMM) initiative in order to improve collaboration between work places and universities by providing opportunities for marine focussed MSc students to undertake work based projects. These are adaptable across disciplines and key economic areas in Scotland. The benefits of such a scheme include:

• Those choosing to host projects can utilise expertise from Scotland’s leading universities in marine science and can access a pool of highly motivated and talented masters students.
• Students can undertake a real world project with real impact for the organisation, whilst improving their employability.
• Universities can develop and build upon links with industry and NGOs, whilst raising the profile of their masters programmes.
• Masters Programme Coordinators can add value to masters programmes by embedding work based projects as an optional alternative to a more traditional dissertation.

The TEF were involved in an international conference between 16-18th September, hosted by University of Dundee, looking at Integrated Perspectives on Catchment and Coastal Zone Management: “Between the River and the Sea”. Fri 2nd May 2014: Planning Scotland’s Seas: Scotland’s National Marine Plan was published for consultation in July 2013 setting out the Scottish Government’s vision for Scotland’s marine environment. The document set marine planning in context, presented key objectives and planning polices related to achieving sustainable development and use of the marine area.

The consultation analysis report outlines the issues and key themes raised by respondents in relation to the objectives and policies for key marine sectors and the National Marine Plan in general. Click here for more info
